While they are widely used as decoration, they original function is to spread good will and compassion through the world. Tibetans believe that the prayers and mantras in them will be blown by the wind and travel the world with it.
Each color symbolizes an element.
White: Air
Red:Fire
Green:Water
Yellow:Earth
Blue:Wind
These flags should be position in a place where they flutter in the wind and they should never be kept on the ground. When the color of your flags starts to fade, it is said that the prayers were carried by the wind.
